Density Fractioning from ATP Dr. Pagenkopf
If you are not too old to remember playing in a bathtub, you will remember how it was with the rubber duck and the soap. Heavier things (like soap) used to sink, and lighter things, (like rubber ducks) would float. Simple as it was (and is) that is the basis for most of todays high-tech waste separation plants. Heavier items (like glass or metal) sink, while lighter materials (like plastics) floats. The problem of the standard process is the lack of precision: alomost all metal and glass items sink and many different kinds of plastics swim. That is not good enough to allow the separation process to function effectively as a basis for recycling the sorted materials. It does not really look like a problem that can be solved, unless you look long enough and hard enough, and happen to have an eye for the dynamics involved...
